Please note that every accredited course requires qualifications in Anatomy and Physiology, Business and Professionalism, and First Aid (not necessarily prior to the course, but before a certificate can be awarded). All postgraduate CPD courses require a sound qualification from an accredited school for entry.

These courses are all accredited by the IAM. Prerequisites for the courses Ð an aromatherapy qualification to IFPA standards. Also proof of practice showing two years minimum experience in practice.



 

The Licentiate Diploma in Clinical Aromatherapy (aromatology)

This course comprises three modules that have been designed to enhance considerably the aromatherapistsÕ knowledge and practical skills. Taught by specialised tutors, this course is to be highly recommended to serious therapists wishing to extend their professional development.

LDCA Module 1

A 2Ðday course that teaches to a competent level of understanding how chemical molecules in essential oils can affect pathological conditions in humans. The course is aimed at aromatherapists who seek a deeper understanding of the chemical composition of the tools of their trade (essential oils, hydrolats and carrier oils) and their many pharmacological effects on the human body. Metabolisation and interaction with the human body is taught as are emotional and psychological effects.

LDCA Module 2

A 3Ðday course (usually following on straight after Module 1). Lectures teaching pathology and the effects of disease on the human body are supported by materia medica, where essential oils are pinÐpointed by their chemical components to treat certain conditions. Integrity of practice is explored with different methods of application of essential oils, including drenching, intensive inhalation and other methods.

LDCA Module 3

This module teaches the intensive use of essential oils and carrier oils both on the skin and also their controlled and informed internal use per os, vagina, and rectum. This module is designed to promote further the beneficial use of essential oils, as well as considering possible hazards (internal administration is to be in conjunction with a person qualified to prescribe). Application techniques are taught, including compresses, specialised local massage movements, specific reflex points, capsule, pessary and suppository manufacture and application.

Examination

The Licentiate Diploma in Clinical Aromatherapy is awarded after successful completion of 10 case studies and a 3Ðhour exam. Successful students will be entitled to wear academic dress appropriate to this level and append the letters LDCA to their name.

The Fellowship Diploma in Clinical Aromatherapy

Prerequisites for the course Ð Licentiate Diploma in Aromatherapy and commitment to further study and research.

FDCA Module 1

This intensive module discusses models of research, how to plan and carry out accurately pilot studies and full research programmes, how to interpret results and how to write up the research. There will be lectures on literature searching and using different methods of information. More materia medica will be taught, giving the student an even deeper insight into the world of essential oils and their pharmacological effects. Support is given by personal tutor throughout the dissertation process.

Examination

The examination is successful on completion of a 15,000 word dissertation. A Fellowship is then granted by the Academy to belong to the Academy with additional benefits. Successful students will be entitled to wear academic dress appropriate to this level and append the letters FDCA to their name.
